Vertigo is the sensation that you or your surroundings are moving or spinning or whirling. Balance disorders are those feelings of dizziness and unsteadiness that often occur if you stand up too quickly or are standing on the edge of a high point. These affect about 2 percent of the population and particularly affects people from the age of 65 and older, and both can have very serious consequences. It is commonly linked to issues with the inner ear and can be a symptom of an ear infection or Ménière’s disease (a sudden attack of vertigo or tinnitus) but it can be as a result of a degree of hearing loss.
Human balance is maintained by the interactions in the brain of nerve impulses from the inner ear, the eye, the neck muscles and joints of the limbs. A disturbance in any of these areas may result in the sensation of dizziness or unsteadiness by interfering with co-ordination of the impulses of the brain. Half of the inner ear is used for hearing and the other half is used for balance, so, if the nerve that connects them is malfunctioning, dizziness can result.
