There is no cure for ringing in the ears but hearing aids can help.
Ringing in the ears is often referred to – and diagnosed as – tinnitus. This is a perception of noises in the ear/head that sound as if they’re internal, rather than coming from an outside source.
Tinnitus may begin suddenly or appear gradually. Other sounds that can be heard include buzzing, whistling, humming, hissing and grinding. The sound might be constantly present, or only noticeable occasionally, to varying degrees, and potentially sound different in each ear. For many sufferers, it is just an annoying noise heard in the ears or head, but impacts upon tinnitus sufferers can vary greatly in range, from mild irritation, to very serious mental health and wellbeing implications.
Medically, there is currently no cure for tinnitus, but there are treatments that can help.
For example;
If caused by a medical condition such as an ear infection, then it can be cured using established medicines.
Should your ears be blocked with ear wax, then removing the blockage can alleviate the tinnitus.
If the cause is not of a recognised medical condition, there are other options that can help with the condition, such as the use of background noises to mask the issue and reduce the impact of the sounds.
Should you have an underlying hearing problem, then treating the hearing issue can help to dramatically reduce the impact of the tinnitus, often causing the tinnitus to fade away.
Having a full Assessment by your Audiologist can ascertain which category above you fit into and help you on your journey to a more peaceful life.
As Steven says “…you hear the tinnitus, you stress about the tinnitus, you then monitor the tinnitus, which stresses you out even further, then the noise seems louder, and so it goes on…”. There are modern hearing aids which can also help to distract or cover over the sounds of ringing in the ears, and are able to be adjusted with the use of a smart phone app.
Steven has a short, subtitled video here, telling you a little more about the condition, and his methods of help. It’s Steven’s job to break this cycle.
