There is no cure for tinnitus. However, don’t despair, there is still some help available to you. Using hearing aids if you have an underlying hearing problem can help to drastically reduce your tinnitus.
Ringing, buzzing, humming or whooshing sounds in the ear is commonly, and medically, known as tinnitus. This is an affliction that can occur over a long period of time, be induced by exposure to loud sounds, such as music or machinery, or be triggered by an accident or trauma.
Whilst the most common demographic of sufferers is the over 65s, recent figures suggest that younger people may be more vulnerable to tinnitus by virtue of the fact that they wear earphones and earbuds so much.
Until recently, the number of people with the condition was 10%, but this has now risen to 13.5% following on from a 35-year study.
Stress is also often a factor, with sufferers being caught up in a vicious cycle whereby they hear the noises, worry about the tinnitus and monitor the tinnitus, which stresses you out so that the noise seems louder.
Some sufferers are able to find their own ways of coping which reduces the impact on their life, however, for others the consequences are much deeper and stronger, with some actually questioning their sanity and mental health.
Steven Hale tells us that those with the condition can find themselves in a vicious circle whereby they experience the noises, then monitor the noises, worry about them coming back – and so the cycle continues.
Whilst hearing aids are not a cure for tinnitus, they can successfully mask the sounds in the ears and remove their prominence, thereby reducing the impact upon the wearer. It is Steven Hale’s job to break the cycle.
